This group wanted: Ten days of wine, wine, wine

After meeting the group in Avignon, they were transferred to Chateauneuf du Pape, right in the heart of the oldest vineyards of France. The first three days concentrated on Chateauneuf and the Cote de Rhone southern and Cote de Rhone northern vineyards. Chateauneuf itself of course, but also Gigondas, Cairanne, and the famous wines of the Cote Rotie... Popes are the ones who boosted wine production here in the 12th century, but it had already existed in the region for hundreds of years.

On the fourth day, we headed north. Passing through Lyon, we arrived in the Beaojolais in time for a visit and wine tasting lunch at the home of a winemaker. the beaujolais is a wine region much maligned since the marketing invention of the inexpensive (and often terribel) Beaojolais Nouveau wines, but the ten Cru-ed villages of the region are maming excellent wines, at very accessible prices.

From there, we continued north into the heart of the Cote d'Or, the most famous vineyards of Burgundy.
The following three days were spent exploring the Cote de Nuits and the Cote de Beaune, the two sections of this renowned wine region, with exclusive wine tastings and fabulous meals. The region is well known for its red wines (from the Pinot Noir grape) but also makes (many believe) the best white wines in the world, made from the versatile Chardonnay grape.

The theme of great Pinot Noirs was followed through with a final two days in the region of Champagne. With a similar climate and the same grape varieties of Burgundy, the main difference between these two regions is, of course, the famous discovery by Dom Perignon, of a method for making a sparkling white wine. the resulting :bubbly" is today coveted the world over.

We dropped the group of friends off in Paris at the end of the trip, to continue their travels homewards.
