| Day 1: Arrival
Upon your arrival in Macon, we will transfer you to your first hotel, in the heart of the Beaujolais. Our Trip Manager will meet with you, fit your bikes, and then go over your package with you. Welcome to the south of Burgundy – a beautiful region filled with Romanesque churches, tranquil paved roads through beautiful villages and vineyards, and centuries of history! Dinner included tonight.
Day 2: Golden Stones 40 km
After breakfast head on your first ride - a beautiful ride that will allow you to discover the ochre coloured stones used in the buildings of the region. This part of France has more Romanesque churches than any other region of France, and you’ll find beautiful photo opportunities throughout the day. A Wine tasting in a small typical winery awaits you, with explanations of the vineyards of the region, before continuing on towards your chateau-hotel for the evening. Enjoy a dip in the pool before your dinner, included this evening.
Day 3: The Voie Verte Bike Path 25 km + long option
After breakfast at the chateau, a short ride brings you to the “Voie Verte”, an incredible bike path, following a system of ancient train lines and canals that crosses the heart of Burgundy. It will take you across the beautiful LamartinianValley, and through a unique bike path tunnel (for 1.6 km!) before bringing you in to the historic town of Cluny. Your hotel this evening is right in the heart of Cluny itself, in order to make explorations easy. Dinner on your own in Cluny, with our suggestions.
Day 4: Cluny 30 km
The riding today is purposefully short, in order to allow you the time to explore Cluny this morning. Once the most important religious centre in all of Europe (yes, even more important than Rome at one point!), you can see vestiges of the important abbey – the largest in Europe until St. Peters in Rome was constructed, 5 centuries later! The French Revolution wreaked an especially violent revenge on the church here, but you can still visit the monastic heart of this medieval town, the sections of the abbey that are remaining, and also the town’s haras, or National horse farms. Afterwards, a short ride brings you along the Voie Verte bike path to your beautiful accommodations for the evening. Dinner included this evening.
Day 5: Heart of the Beaujolais 30 km
Tiny roads winding through the centre of the small villages and the vineyards of the Beaujolais. Along the way, stop at a small priory transformed into a winery for a tasting of the village cru wines of the region, completely different from the mediochre “Beaujolais Nouveau” wines that are found around the world today. Visit the “DuboeufVillage” (Hameau Duboeuf), a wine centre unique in France, with exhibitions explaining the history and present culture of wine, as well as a wine tasting. Continue through the great Beaujolais village names: Moulin a Vent, Fleurie, .. before arriving at your chateau-hotel for your final night. Dinner included.
Day 6: Departure
After a final breakfast at your chateau, your explorations of Southern Burgundy are over.We will transfer you to the train station in Macon. Bon Voyage! |
