| Day 1 : Arrival in Bordeaux
Arrival at the railway station or at the airport. Transfer by taxi to Pauillac in the heart of the Medoc and your first hotel, situated beautifully at the heart of some of the most famous vineyards of the world. You will get your package upon your arrival, and be able to check that your bikes are correctly fitted before your first evening's dinner.
Day 2 :The Wine Route of Great Chateaux 45 km
Your first ride takes you from Pauillac (home of 3 of the 5 Premiers Cru wines of the Medoc) and through a day of discovering the great stars of the wine classification of 1855, and some of the greatest wines in the world. Your ride takes you past the beautiful architecture of these chateaux on your way to Margaux: Lafite-Rothschild, Latour and Mouton-Rothschild, Pichon Longueville, Pontet Canet and Lynch-Bages... As well as the lineup of wonderful wine names, you'll enjoy the pretty scenery, and relaxation of exploring by bike, until you finish the day in Margaux, with a view of its famous Chateau Margaux. You'll definitely want to stop at the entrance of the elegant 19th century chateau for a photo, and a glimpse of the vines that produce this wonderful wine... Dinner tonight is included, at your hotel.
Day 3 : Crossing the Estuary 45 km
This day's ride starts by bringing you to Lamarque, on the banks of the Gironde Estuary, where you'll board a little ferry (with your bikes!) to cross to the other side. On the other side you'll discover the Blaye Citadelle, towering over the Gironde, with 33 hectares of parkland in the centre of this small town. From there, continue along countryside filled with palm trees and fragrant flowers to Bourg sur Gironde, and your next stop, an absolutely charming and authentic bed and breakfast,. You'll want to wander around town before your dinner with your hosts tonight: Bourg sur Gironde is quite beautiful, with its city walls and beautiful architecture, it is one of the best preserved towns of the region.
Day 4 : Vineyards of Pomerol and Fronsac 40 km
en route to your next stop in St Emilion, you will ride through two more wine appellations: those of Fronsac and Pomerol. The Fronsac appellation is one of the oldest in the history of the Bordelais; it was drunk a lot in the courtyard of King Louis the XIV! the Pomerol wine region, as you near St Emilion, is tiny, but the small production of essentially Merlot wines is renowned around the world today, and not just because of its star, the Petrus wines. To finish the day's ride on a high wine note, you'll pass by the two chateaux, Cheval Blanc and Angelus as you arrive at St Emilion. You will settle in to your hotel, in the heart of historic St Emilion for a two-night stay.
Day 5 : St Emilion 20 or 35 km option
Today's ride is short and very pretty. The ride is designed to allow you to explore the surrounding small villages, vineyards, and beautiful scenery by bike (be sure to take your camera). After a morning's short ride, be sure to explore the heart of the incredible UNESCO Heritage Medieval town, with its underground monuments. Once you have had a bite to eat at lunch, meet for your afternoon dedicated to one of the towns Grand Cru Classe chateaux, where you will have a complete tour, followed by a tasting in their private cellar. A second night in the heart of St Emilion awaits to finish your day.
Day 6 : Back to Bordeaux 50 km
Today's ride is the longest of the trip, but you'll find it quite easy, as for most of the day's ride, you are following a bike path. After crossing over the Dordogne River in Branne, you rejoin the "Roger Lapebie" bike path, through beautiful countryside all the way back to the heart of Bordeaux itself. It takes you by Creon, where we encourage you to stop for some exploration. This typical bastide-town is quite beautiful; you'll pass many other villages as well, with pretty Romanesque churches and chapels, fortified mills, and abbeys... The path ends at the Place de la Bourse in the centre of Bordeaux. Once there you are not far from your hotel, in the heart of the historic city, where you will be staying for your final night.
Day 7 : Departure - Bon Voyage!
After a relaxing breakfast, we transfer you to either the Bordeaux train station or to the airport for your further travels. |
